Over four decades ago, Jim launched his entrepreneurial journey with a single store in Dripping Springs, Texas. Through visionary leadership and business acumen, he expanded it into a diversified food corporation generating annual revenues of up to $20 million.
Beyond his own enterprises, Jim and his wife, Maripat, have established themselves as renowned restaurateurs, co-founding and investing in Jack Allen’s Kitchen, Salt Traders Seafood, and their latest venture, Day Maker. Their hospitality ventures reflect the same commitment to growth, quality, and long-term success that defines Jim’s work in business and public service.
Public Service & Visionary Governance
Motivated by a deep commitment to community development, Jim served two terms as Hays County Judge—leading one of the fastest-growing counties in the U.S.. During his tenure, he significantly increased county budget reserves, modernized infrastructure, and secured one of the nation’s largest grants for the Habitat Conservation Plan.
As Hays County experienced explosive growth—over 53% in a decade, making it the fastest-growing county in Texas and the U.S., Judge Powers implemented long-term strategies to strengthen infrastructure, improve financial stability, and position the region for sustainable economic expansion.
- Overhauled the county’s emergency communications system to improve public safety.
- Created a Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone to drive investment and economic growth.
- Launched aggressive economic development initiatives to attract business and strengthen the local economy.
Strategic Leadership in Water Resource Management
In 2008, Texas Governor Rick Perry appointed Judge Powers to the Board of Directors for the Guadalupe-Blanco River Authority (GBRA), a public water conservation and reclamation district responsible for managing water supply, water quality, wastewater treatment, and hydroelectric operations across ten Texas counties.
During his tenure, Judge Powers provided stewardship over critical water resources, helping shape initiatives focused on water conservation, supply development, and environmental protection. His leadership contributed to ensuring sustainable water management for communities along the Guadalupe and Blanco River basins.
Strategic Leadership in Infrastructure & Energy
Judge Powers’ dedication to economic and infrastructure development extends beyond his tenure as County Judge. From 2016 to 2019, he served on the Board of Directors for the Pedernales Electric Cooperative (PEC)—the largest electric distribution cooperative in the U.S..
- Record Growth: In 2016, PEC added a record 12,000 meters, reinforcing its position as one of the fastest-growing electric cooperatives in the U.S.
- Enhanced Reliability: By 2017, PEC surpassed 300,000 active accounts while reducing average unplanned outage times, making it one of the most reliable utilities in Texas.
- National Recognition: In 2018, PEC ranked 10th in the nation for customer satisfaction by J.D. Power and was named Best Electrical Company in the Austin American-Statesman’s “Best of the Best Awards.”

Personal Life
Jim and Maripat have lived in Dripping Springs since 1977, where they’ve raised their four children and built a family rooted in community, service, and faith.
